Awareness and concern is growing about the amount of germs and bacteria your phone can potentially harbour.

And with the outbreak of the corona virus, it’s more important than ever to keep your phone clean. So what are the best ways to keep your phone hygienically clean? Here’s our top 10 ways to keeping your phone clean:

1. Wash your hands.

Often! Experts stress the importance of regularly washing your hands thoroughly with soap or sanitizer for at least 20 seconds. There’s no point keeping your phone clean if you’re hands are covered in germs and bacteria.

2. Apple recommend using an alcohol wipe to disinfect your phone.

“Using a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, you may gently wipe the exterior surfaces of your iPhone,” Apple state on their updated support page. “Don’t use bleach. Avoid getting moisture in any openings, and don’t submerge your iPhone in any cleaning agents.”

3. Buy a phone case with built-in antibacterial agents.

All Tech21 phone cases now come with in-built antibacterial protection. In tests, tech21 phone cases in regular everyday use have been proven to be 99.99% bacteria free. See more for a full list of antibacterial phone cases available.

4. Use a UV phone sanitizer.

These products use UV rays to kill germs and bacteria and claim to be effective against 99.99 of bacteria. However, there is no research to prove they are effective against COVID-19 and they can be expensive.

5. Buy a tech cleaning kit.

These will typically include cleaning solution sprays, microfiber cloths and sets of 20 double-strength cleaning wipes.

6. Use a microfiber cloth.

One of the simplest solutions. This will gently clean your phone without risk of scratching the surfaces. However, they may not be the most effective solution against harmful bacteria and germs.

7. Think about where you hold / take your phone.

Don’t carry your phone in places where it might more easily collect bacteria. For example, don’t take your phone out when using the toilet or while doing sports.

8. Using wireless devices as much as possible.

Try using your phone hands-free as much as possible. Like using Bluetooth-enabled earpods or even using your speaker (when in private) is a great way to minimise hand contact with your phone.

9. As a cheap cleaning solution.

if you don’t have any other cleaning materials listed above, then you could try using a roll of sellotape / Scotch tape. We don’t recommend this as the most effective solution,  but if you haven’t got a tech21 antibacterial phone case or any other effective cleaning solutions handy, try sticking the sellotape to your phone then peel it off for a quick cleaning solution.

10. As a general good practice tip.

Try not to physically share you phone with anybody else. Keep hold of your phone if you are showing somebody something on your screen. And don’t hold or use anybody else’s phone, as you just don’t know what bacteria it may have on it, which can then be easily transferred from your hands to yourself.
