Biggest Software Update Yet Puts the Chat in to Snapchat

Snapchat have just released an update which for the first time allows users to text message and video chat for free via the app. The update focusses on giving users the opportunity to engage in flowing conversation as well as sharing the odd snap or two.

Before we go in to the new features, it’s clear that Snapchat have given the app a pretty hefty makeover. It’s much cleaner, with most buttons and icons redesigned, with the font altered to a tidier style.

Text Messages via Snapchat

Probably the biggest change is the ability to text contacts through Snapchat; previously the only text messaging possible was little 45-character notes. Text messaging through Snapchat is easy – just swipe to the right over the contact you wish to chat with.

Share Photos within the Text Messaging App

Like Whatsapp, Snapchat now allows photos to be sent within the text messages. Either take a snapchat there and then to send, or you can choose a photo from your camera roll. This is the first time Snapchat have ever allowed users to send pictures via the app not solely taken through Snapchat. (And that option is only available via text messaging).

Live Video Chatting

No doubt to compete with the likes of Skype and FaceTime, Snapchatters can now enjoy live video chatting. This feature can only be activated when two users both have the app open and are looking at the same text conversation. At that point a little blue button appears called “Here.”

We love the new Snapchat revamp! How do you feel these features compare with the likes of Skype, FaceTime and Whatsapp?
